Who is Mystical Friend?
Mystical Friend is this website, where people can explore mysticism. It is not an individual person, but a collective of people who consider themselves friends, and who have had mystical experiences (or hope to). The website was begun by Lola Georg and Viv Hawkins. You can read more on the origins of Mystical Friend under the About section.
What is a mystical experience?
A mystical experience is an experience where we notice and acknowledge the intangible or spiritual aspects of life engaging us in a form of union or communion. They can be feelings (like bliss or elation), visions (with eyes opened or closed or in dreams), thoughts you don’t think but come into your mind, poems that write themselves, music that materializes, art work that emerges, or connections we feel in nature.
Mystical experience has been defined as a state of consciousness that is altered or ecstatic, and reveals a spiritual or religious meaning. It is often described as a feeling of oneness with the Divine. These experiences are usually temporary, difficult to describe, and reveal new insights or awareness. Because a mystical experience is hard to describe, we often use metaphor, story, or artistic expressions when trying to convey them to others, or record them for ourselves.
What is mysticism?
Mysticism (as Mystical Friend defines it) is the understanding that direct experience of the Divine is possible, and an essential aspect of communication between the Creator and the created.
Mysticism is very old, and found in most religious traditions. Some of the most common forms are; Christian, Hindu, Jewish (Kabbalah), Islamic (Sufism), Buddhist, and Indigenous (Shamanism). Mysticism is found throughout the world, and can often involve contemplative practices, ceremony and ritual, artistic expression, and other mystical practices.

Am I a mystic? Or, Help! There are strange things happening . . . .
Most people understand that there are intangible aspects to life. We love others. We can sense things. Our intuition can guide us. We have memories or flashbacks. But sometimes, we have experiences that seem surreal, inexplicable, or full of serendipity from some unknown source. Perhaps we have an inkling or feel a nudge. Sometimes a lost item is discovered in plain sight, or a strange series of events reveal an answer to a dilemma. We may see visions, or hear things others do not. We can have premonitions about not doing a particular thing. All of these situations can be dismissed as mere coincidence or happenstance. Or, they can been seen as communications from other realms that can be cultivated into deeper connections and relationships. If there are strange things happening, you may be having some mystical experiences, and we invite you to explore with us. You are not alone, and these experiences are real.
What are mystical practices?
Mystical practices are activities we engage in that increase the probability we will recognize mystical experience. They can be body or movement focused, writing or journaling exercises, different types of prayer or meditation, solo or group activities – to name a just a few types of practices. Here you will find a wide variety of mystical practices to help cultivate and sustain relationships – with your self, with others, with the Divine, and with the more-than-human world.
